0:00

Peace, mercy, and blessings of God be upon you. In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to God, Lord of the worlds, and may God’s peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and all his companions. To proceed:

0:11

We are continuing with the clear poem on essential jurisprudence.

0:15

Here the poet says: “Then the obligatory zakat falls into categories: currency, livestock, trade goods, produce from the earth, and the prescribed zakat of breaking the fast.”

0:26

You’ll notice the meaning here begins in the second hemistich. This is the second hemistich.

0:31

Because in the first hemistich, which we covered in the previous clip,

0:39

in the previous clip, we covered the line that says what?

0:47

Name the livestock animal in this hemistich.

0:53

“Grazing livestock”—in meaning, this hemistich relates to what came before, so we didn’t mention it on this slide.

1:00

Then, the obligatory zakat falls into categories. What are the types of obligatory zakat? First, zakat on the two currencies.

1:10

Currency, livestock, and trade goods.

1:16

The basic categories, and produce from the earth. There is another category: the prescribed zakat of breaking the fast.

1:25

Zakat al-Fitr is zakat on the person, not on wealth.

1:31

That’s why no minimum threshold is required for it. One moment, Razan—one moment, please. May God bless you.

1:39

So, the first type of obligatory zakat is

1:45

zakat on currency. The jurists, may God have mercy on them, call it zakat on the two currencies—the two currencies.

1:55

What are the two currencies? Gold and what?

2:02

Silver. But gold and silver have taken on a new form in our time:

2:08

a new form of currency, which most scholars today consider to be currency subject to zakat. These are currencies

2:22

and modern currencies.

2:26

Paper money and coins are currency, so zakat is due on them; usury applies, and they can serve as capital, and so on.

2:35

So zakat is due on currency, whether it is gold, silver, or modern paper money.

2:44

As for gold, what is its minimum threshold? What is the threshold for gold?

2:50

The minimum threshold for gold is 85.

2:56

80 grams of gold is the minimum threshold.

3:01

If you have 85 grams of gold, you must pay zakat.

3:08

The zakat threshold for silver is 595.

3:12

That is 595 grams of silver.

3:17

As for modern currencies, we say that if their value reaches the value of 595 grams...

3:25

you must pay zakat on them. Check websites that list daily silver prices,

3:31

and see how much a gram of silver costs. For example, if a gram costs two riyals, multiply two riyals by 595.

3:43

And never mind the handwriting—multiply it. What’s the result?

3:52

1,190, right or not?

3:58

Yes, 1,190 Saudi riyals. This is just an example. Don’t say, “I swear, I said that I had such-and-such.” I’m saying, suppose

4:06

a gram of silver costs two riyals; that would be the result. If we suppose it costs three riyals, the amount changes. So you calculate it according to your currency.

4:16

Clear? Okay, that’s regarding zakat on

4:21

cash, whether gold, silver, or modern currencies.

4:29

Clear, guys? Okay.

4:33

In the name of God. Next, what do we come to? We come to
