The Tomb That Changed History. The Church of the Holy Sepulchre.

If you were to travel to Jerusalem today, walking through the narrow, winding souk of the Christian quarter, you would eventually arrive at a courtyard.

It feels like the center of the world. Looming before you is an ancient patchwork building,

scarred by centuries of fire, earthquake, and war. This is the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.

And inside these walls lies the most significant piece of real estate on planet Earth.

Tradition holds that this single building covers two locations.

Golgotha, the site of the crucifixion, and the empty tomb where Jesus was buried and rose again.

For centuries, skeptics argued that this could not be the real spot.

It sits deep inside the current city walls of Jerusalem, and the Bible clearly states that Jesus was crucified outside the city gate.

But archaeology tells a different story. We now know that in the first century, the city walls were much smaller.

This area was indeed outside the city. It was an abandoned stone quarry used for tombs, exactly as the Gospels describe.

In the year 326, Empress Helena, the mother of Emperor Constantine, arrived here.

The Romans had built a pagan temple to Venus over the site to stop Christians from worshipping there.

But when Helena ordered the temple torn down, they found a rock-cut tomb underneath.

Today, when you enter the church, you must navigate through crowds of pilgrims.

The air is thick with the smell of beeswax candles and incense.

You walk up steep stairs to touch the Rock of Calvary, and you descend to stand in line for the Etiquil,

the small shrine that encloses the remains of the tomb.

Inside, there is a marble slab covering the burial bench.

In 2016, for the first time in centuries, scientists were allowed to lift that marble slab.

What they found astonished them. Beneath the layers of history, they found the original limestone bedrock.
