Five seconds. That's all it takes for a person to think that they understand you.

And most people think that making a good first impression within those first five seconds is some sort of complicated science.

That charisma or that invisible magnetic force that makes someone like you comes from some sort of rare combination of looks, status, and confidence.

But that is not true. Charisma is actually much simpler than people think.

In fact, the very key to charisma can be expressed by this simple equation.

X plus one. That's it. That's all you need to remember.

In any situation, X represents the minimum required behavior. The socially acceptable baseline.

Sometimes X is speaking politely. Sometimes X is small talk. And sometimes, like in an elevator, X is complete silence.

X is what keeps the interaction normal. But you see, charismatic people, they don't stop at X. They add one.

One small intentional action that breaks the script just enough to be noticed. In an elevator, silence is normal.

You're not required to talk to the stranger that just got in with you.

So the plus one here is a simple compliment, an observation, or a small question. I love the Smiths. Sorry.

I said I love the Smiths. Immediately, you're read as an outgoing human being. Someone who adds energy to a room.

And this pattern, this algorithm, it literally works everywhere. With a cashier, it's X, which would be thank you.

Plus a human comment. Something extra. With a friend, it's an expected response plus a deeper question.

You see the extra step, it's always small. The plus one is tiny, but over time it adds up and it changes everything.

Because people don't remember getting 100% on that one test. They remember getting 101%.

They remember the extra miles. They don't remember what's required in a social interaction.
