Peace and God's mercy and blessings be upon you. In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Praise be to God, Lord of the worlds. May God bless and grant peace to the Messenger of God, his family, his companions, and all who follow him. To proceed:

We are continuing with the poem on essential jurisprudence, and we had reached the discussion of Hajj.

Is it an individual obligation for every Muslim to learn the rulings of Hajj?

The answer is no.

Rather, it is obligatory for the person

who is able to perform Hajj and meets its conditions to learn its rulings.

So, if someone does not meet the conditions that make it obligatory, they need not know the details.

Accordingly, everyone must know whether Hajj is obligatory for them,

so they can go and learn the details, or whether Hajj is not obligatory for them.

In that case, it is enough for them to know that Hajj is not obligatory for them.

They are not individually obligated to learn the details.

So, regarding the individual obligation of Hajj, we...

we are discussing the conditions that make Hajj obligatory. Through these conditions, you will know whether Hajj is obligatory for you,

so you can pursue it and learn more about its rulings,

learning how to begin, its pillars, its duties, and the like,

or whether Hajj is not obligatory for you, in which case you need not do so.

Understood? In this chapter, we will learn the conditions that make Hajj and Umrah obligatory as well,

because, according to the correct view among the Hanbali scholars—the view adopted in the Hanbali school of Imam Ahmad, may God have mercy on him—Umrah is obligatory.

Umrah is also obligatory. But note that Hajj and Umrah are required only once in a lifetime.

This is what the poet mentioned in his words: “The obligation of the Hajj of Islam”

“and Umrah, promptly, for all people, on condition of Islam and freedom,”

“sanity, puberty, legal ability, and a mahram for a woman. Whoever is able”

“should hasten to fulfill it.” So, the conditions that count—first, the issue we will mention here—

are the obligation of the Hajj of Islam and Umrah.

Thus, Hajj and Umrah are obligatory, and this obligation is immediate.

What does “immediate” mean? Once the conditions making Hajj obligatory are met,

you must hasten to perform Hajj at the earliest opportunity, in the first year you are able to.

So Hajj and Umrah are obligatory: Hajj is the Hajj of Islam, performed once in a lifetime. That is why it is called the Hajj of Islam.

And one Umrah in a lifetime is also obligatory immediately; those who meet the conditions may not delay either one.

What are these conditions? The first condition for the obligation is Islam. He said, “on condition of being Muslim.” This is the first condition.

So Hajj is not obligatory for a disbeliever. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him,

sent someone to proclaim,

“No polytheist may perform Hajj after this year.”

Abu Bakr led the people in Hajj, then Ali recited Surat Bara’ah, and decreed

that no polytheist may perform Hajj after this year, nor may anyone circumambulate the Kaaba naked. This was by his command.

Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, proclaimed that no polytheist may perform Hajj after this year. Hajj is not obligatory for a disbeliever.

All right, a disbeliever is not required to perform Hajj. That is the first condition: Islam.

So it is not obligatory for a disbeliever. The second condition is freedom. Along with Islam, freedom is required; it is incompatible with enslavement.

So Hajj is not obligatory for a slave. This is one of the ways Islamic law eases the burden

on those who are incapacitated, deficient, and the like.
