You may be living the kind of tasteless salt that Jesus warned you about

without even realizing it.

And if you've always thought of salt as a preservative,

then you may

never have truly understood this passage:

"You are the salt of the world, and the light of the world."

You've probably heard this passage a hundred times.

Salt is a preservative, and light is about setting a good example,

right?

This understanding makes perfect sense

, but today I want to tell you three things.

First, the true meaning of salt in the Bible

has nothing to do with preservatives.

Second,

Jesus said two seemingly contradictory things in the same sermon;

this contradiction hides the deepest secret of faith.

Third

, you may be living a spiritual dead sea

without even realizing it.

This isn't my personal insight,

nor is it some kind of spiritual chicken soup; it's written in the Bible

, but we haven't noticed it until now.

Today,

we'll thoroughly dissect this passage. Let's look at

Matthew 5:

13-16.

I'll read the passage aloud first,

and you can listen carefully

and see if there's anything

that differs from your previous understanding: "

You are the salt of the earth.

If salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again?"

You will be useless in the future, but

you will be left out and trampled on.

You are

a city of light in the world, built on a mountain, so that you cannot be hidden.

You light lamps and do not put them under a bowl

, but on a lampstand, and they give

light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others

, that they may see your good works

and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.

Good! This passage comes from the Sermon on the Mount.

What is the Sermon on the Mount?

This is Jesus' most important public sermon,

Matthew chapters 5-7,

one of the most valuable passages in the entire New Testament.

The "salt and light" part

is right at the beginning of the Sermon on the Mount.

Jesus placed it so prominently,

indicating that He considered it extremely important.

The disciples needed to understand it right away.

Today's passage is quite substantial,

containing

at least five or six points worth exploring in depth.

You could talk for half an hour just about the word "salt"

—that's not an exaggeration

. You'll understand after reading today's content.

We're not in a rush; we'll take it one step at a time.

Today, we'll start with... If you cut into salt and then into light,

you'll discover a secret order between these two concepts that most people have never noticed.

But we'll discuss that later. Let's

talk about salt first.

Let's see how most people,

including most biblical commentaries

, understand the statement "You are the salt of the world."

If you check any biblical commentary

and turn to Matthew 5:13,

the standard answer will most likely be this: Salt is a preservative.

In ancient times, without refrigerators

, salt was the only thing that could prevent food from spoiling.

Therefore, Christians are the preservatives of the world

. The world will decay,

and your task is **to prevent it from spoiling too quickly**.

Is this understanding reasonable?

Of course.

Look at history; salt was indeed a strategic resource in many countries.

What were the consequences of privately selling salt in ancient China?

A capital offense.

How expensive was salt in medieval Europe?

Roman soldiers were sometimes paid a portion of their wages directly from salt.

The English word "salary" comes from the Latin word for salt, which

shows how important salt is.

Around the world, there are traditional ways of preserving food with salt – cured

meat, cured

fish

, pickles, and salted vegetables all rely on salt.

Without salt, food spoils in a few days.

So, if someone asks you what the function of salt is,

and you immediately answer "preservation,"

that's perfectly fine.

If you search online for "salt,"

nine out of ten sermons follow this line of thought.

This template is correct;

it helps many people understand the basic meaning of this passage.

But have you noticed that you hardly need to think when you listen to this passage?

Because you're so familiar with this content,

like a phone password you've entered so many times that your fingers memorize it,

you can unlock it without even thinking.

I was the same way; for a long time,

my reaction to this passage was just "Oh,

salt and light," and then I'd turn the page.

So, if you've always understood it this way—that

Christians are the world's preservatives,

and our mission is to prevent the world from getting worse—

you're not wrong;

this direction is correct.

But what we need to do today

is pause this automatic unlocking

. While the understanding that salt is equivalent to a preservative is not wrong

, it may only be the surface.

If we only stop at this layer,

we may miss

something deeper, even more crucial, hidden beneath.

And this thing is not something I invented

, nor is it some new theological innovation;

it is written in the Bible

, right there in the text, in black and white.

It's just that we are too used to the answer of preservative;

it came too

quickly and smoothly, so

smoothly that we never thought to stop and ask, "

Wait, is that really all?"

Today, we're going to delve deeper into a question,

and I want to tell you beforehand

that the answer we get from that question isn't just a simple "oh

, I didn't know there was such a meaning"

—it will directly change the way you understand your own identity.

What does it mean to be a Christian?

What does it mean to have a role in this world?

After you see that answer,

the answers to these questions will be different.
